Varjo was an indie/alternative rock band from Heinola, Finland. Their music was influenced by gothic rock, post-punk and ambient.
The band was formed in 1994 by vocalist-guitarist Antti Lautala. After a while the band was joined by guitarist Henry Waldén and bassist Kaide Luukkonen. In search for a fitting dummer the band used a drum machine in its first gigs and records. Their first EP, Ensinäytös, was released independently in 1997 and a couple years later the Futurecords record company was formed around the band.
The first full-length, Kuka korvaa poistetun sydämen?, was released in 2000 and the drum machine was replaced by drummer Jaani Peuhu. The band toured actively to promote the album and musicvideos for the songs Korvaamaton and Maailmanpyörä were made. The second full-length, Paratiisissa, was released in 2003 but after the consecutive gigs the band parted ways with Jaani Peuhu. He was replaced by Jari "Kailis" Kailokari.
In 2006 Varjo released their third album, Muistijälkiä. After the tour Kaide Luukkonen resigned from the band and was replaced by Arto Nevalainen. The band also had to look for another drummer after the departure of Kailis. The joining of Jukka Laine completed the line-up until 2008 when Arto Nevalainen left the band in and was replaced by Matthew Pallasoja.
Guitarist Henry Waldén died in an accident on September 20th, 2008. Antti and Henry had previously agreed that there wouldn't be Varjo without both of them, so the band was decided to be buried along with Henry. The final album, Viimeinen näytös which was ready to be recorded when Henry died, was recorded by the surviving members. The trio continues making music under the name Silent Scream.
Viimeinen näytös is dedicated to the memory of Henry Waldén and former keyboardist Sampo Lindfors, who had died in 2007.
