A Finnish Girl Rock band that begin in 1994.
Thee Ultra Bimboos’ girls had the same, fairly modest dream (which, like we all know nowadays, evolved to something bigger, better & very uncut): to play in a rock’n’roll band and make own songs, maybe play live one day, have fun with the stuff they love the most – and drink lots of free beer! They’d been rock’n’roll fans all their lives, and the most of their friends were doing the same thing, so they figured why not, and gave it a shot: they loaned a rehearsal place and all the gear and started rockin’ from the day one. No nonsense, but distorted chords, powerbeats, bass-frequences which make people shit in their pants, loud & sirenic harmonies, great tunes right from the start. Whoever nowadays owns their super-rare first EP should put it on the turntable in this instant and LISTEN: the creativity, the (bad) taste and hunch for (good) music can be heard already in legendary songs “Who Stole My Underwear” and “Hypnotized”, which was actually El Bimbo’s gift to the girls. El Bimbo, better known as Flaming Sideburns’ Ski Williamson, was present in the first rehearsals and no-one knows how many times after that – thee guitar wizard has played many different characters in Bimboo Wonderland during the years, such as producer, songwriter, arranger, common shrink and the most of all – a good friend.
The first 7” EP Absolutely Fabulous was recorded only a half a year after the band’s gettogether. They played their debut gig at El Bimbo’s birthday in Semifinal, Helsinki around the time the Ab Fab was released and…the rest is rock’n roll history, though definitely not as boring as the phrase comes out when you read it. There’s a lot of laughter, stupidity, card games, wrestling, partying, crying, fighting over all imaginable things and those you really could never imagine, making peace, paranoia, playing records, playing pinball, eating, farting, burping, drinking beer and smoking cigarettes, drinking more beer and smoking more cigarettes, splitting up, shouting, getting together again, dancing, seeing other bands play great gigs, making friends, loving. Yeah, there’s lotsa love involved. There’s also rehearsals after rehearsals, gigs after gigs, tours after tours, in Europe, Scandinavia, Finland, and all over again. After their first German tour they made a record contract with Berlin-based TWANG! Records and released two full lengt albums, a single compilation “We Can Stop Whenever We Want” (1996) and garage-rock-piece “Supermess”(1998) with the well-respected indie label. The third album, now widely recognized and praised “Four Fans Can’t Be Wrong”(2000) was released by TWANG!’s co-operators in Finland, Stupido Twins. This record woke up the “majors” interest and took Thee Ultra Bimboos to play in Denmark’s gigantic Roskilde Festival (2001) and Sweden’s rock-gathering Hultsfed, among the biggest national festivals and venues. Even though the distribution of “Four Fans” hardly existed outside of Finland, they continued conquering people’s hearts’n’ears with their live performances, and kept playing more tours and individual gigs with other Scandinavian heroes and heroines like The Hellacopters, The Nomads, The Voladoras, The Launderettes, to name a few.
The change of the years 2002 and 2003 has been a turning point for Thee Ultra Bimboos in many ways. They signed a new record deal with Finnish Spinefarm Records sublabel Ranch. They decided to do their new album with totally new crew and in a different country. The plan which started more like a wild dream suddenly turned into reality; in january 2003 they started recording their fourth album “Bimboo Wizard” in small, snowy Skellefteå, upnorth Sweden with the producers (also known as “förbannade kaniner”) Michael Lohse (ex-Atomic Swing, now the frontman of the Kooks) and Johan Nilsson (ex-This Perfect Day). Bimboo Wizard created its magical figure in two intense recording sessions and a mixing period, which was made in Stockholm with long-term musician and studio superpro Ronald Bood sitting behind the mixing desk.
Bimboo Wizard has landed on planet Earth after a long and heavy struggle against the laws of the Universe. Her weapons in the battle were guitars, drums, bass and human voices – well, gotta admit She used some organ and percussions too, just to make the ground shake a little bit more. With a little help of these natural sources She became invincible. She won, because She got Her physical and spiritual appearence, Her stunning beauty and power straight from the Four Fans. And you sure remember, what Four Fans can’t be?
