Kevin Salem is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. He was born in 1959 and spent his childhood in the small steel and coal town of Johnstown in rural Pennsylvania. After some time in London (England) he ended up in Boston. There he found himself in the moderately succesful Boston-based band Dumptruck. After three years as Dumptruck's guitarist - during which time Salem recorded with the band what was arguably their best album, For the Country - Salem left and decided to relocate to Brooklyn, New York, to pursue a solo career.
In New York, Salem caught the ear of fellow songwriter Freedy Johnston, who got Salem to record and perform with his band for four years.
Salem's debut solo album, Soma City, won positive responses upon its release in 1994.
