Carboon (1977 - 2000) were a Dutch folk-group from Maastricht in the province of Limburg in the Netherlands. Carboon named themselves after the Carboniferous period during which coal was formed and their initial music included brass instruments and celebrated the culture of Limburg's miners and coal-mining communities. In the latter years, Carboon's releases evolved to include songs that reflected a less coal specific narrative and embraced a broader historical and folktale repertoire.
The band's core members were Jean Innemee (bass and guitar), Conny Peters (keyboards, production), Ben Erkens (guitar, vocals) and Henk Steijvers (guitar, vocals). In 1976, the year before the band had officially formed, the four released their first LP as a concept album to test the market.
Carboon's first album, Witste Nog, Koempel... was the first Limburgish album to make 'Gold', the first 50,000 copies selling out within three months of release. On it the journalist and social-commentator Jan Hendriks (1937) wrote and sang Kunrade-Voerendaal it. While nostalgic and sentimental, the song is also sharp-witted and educational.
Others who worked on this first album included the brass-band Fanfare Sint Barbara from Brunssum, Langberg conducted by H. Boers, Ab van Goor (percussion), Frans Doolaard (steel guitar), Jean Kraft (accordion), Theo Breuls (piano), Floor Minnaert (flute), Götz Alsmann (banjo and mandolin) and René Innemee (guitar).
