James graduated from college with a music degree and a plan to move out to Los Angeles after working a year to save up money. After visiting a college friend in Atlanta, he decided to abandon his LA plans and moved down to Georgia where he played bass, guitar, and piano in several rock and R&B bands.
A sideman gig playing guitar and keys with a Nashville Star contestant reintroduced him to a lot of the country music he'd heard growing up in a small town but had written off due to his love of rock at the time. James began writing and playing in songwriter venues around Atlanta while starting work on what would become his first release, the Firecrackers EP. Eventually, he made the difficult decision of sacrificing a 3-year relationship in order to take the next step and move to Nashville.
Living the Nashville life of countless nights spent singing in smoky bars, drinking, and not sleeping finally caught up with him and he lost his voice for a period of several months, just as he was about to begin recording vocal tracks for the Firecrackers EP. Financial stress contributed as well, and James found himself without work since losing his voice and being unable to sing in the cover band that had been his sole source of income since moving to Tennessee.
Contemplating his next move, he retreated back to Albion NY to his parents' home for a few weeks to rest and recover. There, he started singing for small amounts of time and trying to recover his voice. A few months after returning to Nashville, he found his voice was strong enough to be able to finish recording the EP and finally released it in November of 2009.
Since then, Adam James has won a songwriting competition at the famed Pick's Nashville venue, signed a publishing deal with Green Hills Publishing, and formed a duo & a band (Adam & Aubryn, and The Firecrackers respectively) and is continuing to work on those two projects.
