"Forgive Me" is a song written by Aliaune "Akon" Thiam, Claude Kelly and Giorgio Tuinfort and produced by Akon for the U.S. version of British singer Leona Lewis's debut album Spirit. The single was released in the United Kingdom on November 3, 2008 and appeared on Spirit: The Deluxe Edition, which was released November 17, 2008. Song Structure "Forgive Me" is written in the key of A minor with a Shuffle Dance groove."Forgive Me" is an R&B song with a shuffle dance groove written in A minor. It moves at 120 bpm and is set in common time. The album version runs for three minutes and forty-one seconds, while the single mix runs for three minutes and twenty-three seconds. Lewis performs her highest pitch (D5) during the bridge, and her lowest pitch (A3) during each verse. The song refers to a protagonist in a one-sided relationship who leaves her boyfriend and eventually finds someone to reciprocate her love. Though she has found love from someone else, she defends herself and asks her ex for forgiveness. Promotion Lewis performed the song on the National Lottery on 29th October 2008 and GMTV on 31st October. Outside of the UK, she also performed the song on the Italian TV show Carramba Che Fortuna and Swedish Idol. Reception The first review of the single from the BBC stated that "Forgive Me" is a "really funky pop song which is guaranteed to get people up on their feet". The Mirror said the song "showcases her voice of fire and honey. No apologies necessary." Digital Spy gave the song 3 out of 5 stars, stating that after her previous three ballad singles, "it's a nice change, therefore, to hear her upping the tempo for single number four." However, they also claimed that "the adultery-themed lyrics are a poor match for the sweet, unassuming Hackney girl." Music Video Lewis performing in the "Singin' in the Rain" inspired scene in the music video for "Forgive Me".The music video for the song, directed by Wayne Isham, was released in September 2008. It starts out with Lewis receiving a text from her boyfriend saying he is just a minute away from meeting up with her. The video then turns into a dream-like sequence with Lewis dancing in four set-ups inspired by the Hollywood musicals West Side Story, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Singin' in the Rain and Carousel. The video ends with Lewis coming back to reality after a drop of rain lands on her hand. The JabbaWockeeZ dance crew also make an appearance in the Rocky Horror scene in the video, dancing behind Lewis. Chart Performance On November 9th, "Forgive Me" entered the UK Singles Chart at number five, with sales of 37,889. It also charted at number five in Ireland.
