1. The Snow is a cinematic literary-pop quartet from Brooklyn, New York. It began when Pierre de Gaillande and Hilary Downes collaborated on made-to-order songs written as wedding gifts and birthday presents. The songs evolved into a project, which eventually led to an invitation to a midsummer tour of Russia, Sweden and Finland with musician friends who needed an opening act.
The Snow's influences are as diverse as its sound – having been described in turns as post-apocalyptic French cabaret, gypsy pop, and carnival Americana. The band is comprised of de Gaillande (Bad Reputation, Melomane, Morning Glories) on vocals, guitar and banjo; Downes on vocals and keys; Jeffrey Schaeffer on drums and Christian Bongers (Falcon, Hurricane Bells) on electric and upright bass.
The band's gorgeous debut, True Dirt was recorded and mixed at Trout Studios by acclaimed producer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Apples in Stereo, Sean Lennon, Evan Dando, Sebadoh) and was released on Vermillion Music in the spring of 2008. Their follow-up, I Die Every Night, was released in early 2010, recorded by Shannon Ferguson at Serious Business Studios in New York. Additional tracking was done with Daniel Weintraub in New York.
The Snow returns for a third outing, Disaster is Your Mistress, its most complex and lushly orchestrated album to date. Veteran engineer Charles ‘Chicky’ Reeves (Radiohead, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Tito Puente) navigates haunting classical flourishes, Motown horns and Beatlesque pop soundscapes to take the listener on an unexpected sonic journey. Think of Serge Gainsbourg hitching a ride with Carole King and Fiona Apple in a boat atop rolling rapids of champagne.
3. The Snow is a melodic, alt-space rock outfit from Los Angeles that formed in a quick beautiful instance in the Spring of 2006 when Aaron Smart, Billy Mohler, Garry Ventura, and Jason Johnson went to record a few songs at Stagg St. Studios.
Garry and Aaron had been working on a few songs when they realized they needed a guitarist and bassist to take it to the next level. Aaron called upon long time friend Jason Johnson (Pete Yorn, Paloalto) to play guitar. Then needing a bass player they ran into Billy Mohler (Jimmy Chamberlain Complex) at a studio in North Hollywood. They told billy about the project and he expressed interest. They got together to work out the songs, and the magic was there. The first two Titles "October" and "trading Post", recorded in less than 2 days, were enough for them to know that something special was happening. A dynamic, tight, yet melodic rhythm section, a soaring spaced out sonic display of guitars, and a quiet to wailing vocal assembly.
Once The Snow had developed a full albums worth of songs they enlisted production team Heroes and Villains to record it with them. They entered Ocean Way Studios Hollywood in the spring of 2007. They kept it realistic, as they say, and recorded the old way; straight to 2" inch tape, live, with no click track. Recording live as a real band they captured real emotions at that moment and an intensity now lost in the stale digital recording realm. With the new assembled album The Snow began to book shows around Los Angeles in October, 2007 and have yet to look back. After less than 5 shows they signed with the independent Los Angeles label, Northern Lights. With an amazing self titled record in tow, and a new label poised to promote it, The Snow have began to book regional shows to get the music out. Phil Buckman (iMPOSTERS, One Side Zero) has recently been recruited to play bass for the group as The Snow spreads across the U.S. Read more on Last.fm.
