1. Scarce is an alternative rock band from New England, United States, originally from Providence, RI, later based in Boston, MA. They were active from 1993 to 1997 and reformed in 2008.
Formed by Chick Graning (vocals, guitar), Joyce Raskin (bass, vocals) and Jud Ehrbar (drums), the trio soon caused a major label bidding war. Their Red EP was distributed worldwide, landing in the U.K. charts, with songs like All Sideways and Days Like This. Scarce toured America, Europe, England and Canada with much acclaim for their live shows.
Début album, Deadsexy, was recorded with new drummer Mike Levesque and set for release in June in the United Kingdom and Europe, with a U.S. release scheduled for a few months later.
In June 1995, however, following a support tour with Hole in Europe and on the verge of seriously breaking it, Chick Graning suffered a brain hemorrhage and lapsed into a coma for several weeks, with doctors giving him a 10 percent chance of survival. Graning recovered spectacularly quickly and, astonishingly, Scarce decided to keep going as a band. Graning had learn to speak and walk again, then relearn all his guitar parts and vocals from scratch.
The U.S. release of their album was re-scheduled for 1996. The band used the extra time to re-record a couple of tracks and replace a few songs with four new ones, recorded with yet another new drummer, Joe Propatier. The album, with an alternate tracklisting, was finally released in the United States in 1996. The U.S. version is listed here on Last.fm as Deadsexy (1996 Version).
Scarce played two major U.S. tours in 1996 and 1997. Nevertheless, the strain of Graning's illness took its toll on the band and they went their separate ways.
After a decade of silence, Joyce Raskin wrote a book about Scarce's tragic story: 'Aching To Be' (2007). She sent Graning a draft copy prior to publication. They made amends and decided to re-form Scarce. They started playing shows, worked on new material and even made it back to the United Kingdom. They were not forgotten.
With no expectations but to savor being a real band again, and no one to answer to but themselves, Scarce finally have the happy new beginning they deserved all along. Several releases followed, including the self-released EPs Tattoos and Parades (2008) and Noble Scars (2016).
Joyce Raskin's second book contained stories based on Scarce lyrics. The 'digital only' EP had the same title as the book: The Fall and Rise of Circus Boy Blue (2011). April 2020 saw the (Bandcamp only) digital release of Scarce Demos 1993.
