There's never a dull moment with Ruck Rover. Their third album 'No Hints, No Clues, No Lies' is once again spring loaded with their signature pop songs that combine the songwriting genius of Stanley Paulzen and Rob Clarkson. It all seems so effortless for Ruck Rover to take their acute social observations and team it with infectious melodies and produce an album that will charm the pants off you.
After their successful ‘Before We Lost It’ and ‘Good People’s Highway’ albums, this time around they’ve broadened their pop sensibilities and lyrically it’s not just all cleverness and flippancy. Melancholy is often not far from the surface, highlighted by the acoustically sparse opening track ‘Please Respect Our Neighbours’. This emotionally charged song hints at the turmoil behind many relationships.
The album has so many highlights, and rewards with every listen. The quirky ‘Chat Room’ is about a man’s strange habits whilst trying to find love on the internet. It has the Ruck Rover trademark all over it. Rob Clarkson has rarely been in better form, in both voice and songwriting, than ‘Other People's Good News'. The irony laced electro-pop ‘1000 Times’ sees the band embrace the welcome addition of the keyboards to their sound. The album maintains its strength with the power pop of ‘Mainland Sensibilities’ (a tale of a girl returning to Tassie) and ‘Something Good’.
Ruck Rover have delivered another entertaining album in 'No Hints, No Clues, No Lies' sparkling with their great brand of accessible pop. Smart, irreverent and fun – what else can you ask for in a pop record.
