The aptly named DOWNER TRIO may not sound inviting, but don't be scared off, this is truly beautiful music. While it would not be unfair to compare Phelps' voice to the sound of a basset hound with a broken leg, it's also true that it conveys just as much sorrow. If these songs were sung by some country mega-star, Joel R.L. Phelps would be a rich man. The Downer Trio "3" is sparsely orchestrated alt-country; often just guitar, drums and steel guitar, with occasional horn and clarinet parts....
