In the early 21st century, he rose to internet fame as a co-host of podcasts on the duckfeed.tv network and as a composer of late-20th century video game inspired music, building on his prior experience as a rock-n-roll musician. He later released a string of successful albums with an enigmatic collaborator, credited variously as "Robob Barker" or "Garrison Keillor Ghost P33niz 3000" (although it is suspected that this person - whose appearance at their infrequent live performances was always concealed by a semi-translucent shower curtain hung around a comically small bathtub - was indeed not one but many different collaborators of Butterfield, including, perhaps, the late singer-songwriter Glenn Danzig and a flute taped to a home-brew kit). Among the most successful of these is the now classic Kilgore Trout Mask Replica trilogy, which explores the dissonances between American literary fiction during the Cold War and popular representations of avant-garde rock music in video games.
